Sewing for Mother's Day: our project ideas based on your mom's profile
L'équipe So TissusMay 31st is approaching, and we've seen the same question pop up in several DMs this week: "Do you think I have time to sew something for my mom before Mother's Day?"
The short answer: yes. Three weeks is plenty for a well-chosen project. The long answer: it depends on the project, the fabric, and a little bit on your mom. We'll give you our suggestions.
The Spirit of a Handmade Gift
A handmade piece isn't just any gift. It's time given, attention cut and assembled for someone special. It doesn't need to be spectacular — above all, it needs to be her.
The classic trap: wanting to do too much, choosing a complicated pattern, panicking ten days before the deadline, and finishing it haphazardly. For Mother's Day, we always recommend a project you've already mastered, or a simple cut in a beautiful fabric. The fabric is what will make all the difference.
Which Project for Which Profile
The Elegant Mom: The Silk Muslin Dress or Blouse
If she loves to dress up for Sunday lunches, a dress or blouse in floral printed silk muslin is unbeatable. The drape is airy, it floats with every movement, and a floral print for May is very in season.

Be careful, silk muslin requires a bit of handling — fine thread, fine needle, clean table. If this is your first time with this fabric, we refer you to our complete guide to silk muslin.
The Discreet Mom: The Crepe Top
For moms who don't like to attract too much attention but appreciate a material that makes a difference, a simple top in silk georgette crepe or crepe de chine always hits the mark. Basic cut, short or three-quarter sleeves, and the quality of the fabric does all the work.

These fabrics wear well with jeans or a skirt — useful for someone who wants an easy-to-integrate piece.
The Hands-on Mom: The Silk Twill Scarf
The quickest option to sew, and one that everyone likes. A square of printed silk twill, rolled hems, and it's done. Count on two hours of work for an item she'll keep for years.

Bonus: the scarf fits into a flat box, so it's easy to mail if your mom lives far away.
The Events Mom: The Jacquard Skirt
For those who have occasions to celebrate (weddings, exhibition openings, dinners), a silk jacquard skirt is an investment that will last ten years. Simple cut — elastic waist or invisible zipper — let the fabric do the work.

The Romantic Mom: The Lace Blouse
A white lace blouse, lined with a cream or nude underlay, over white jeans, is the very image of a spring break. If she likes a slightly retro look, floral pattern lace is unbeatable.

Three Tips Before You Start
1. Measure her discreetly. If you don't have access to her exact measurements, check the label of a blouse she wears often. No need for perfect bespoke — most tops and dresses forgive half a centimeter.
2. Pre-wash the fabric except for pure silk (which is dry-cleaned). This avoids the unpleasant surprise of shrinkage after the first wash.
3. Pay attention to the packaging. A sewn fabric deserves better than a plastic bag. A simple box, tissue paper, a little note — it adds ten Mother's Day points for zero effort.
What if you don't have time to sew?
Give her the fabric and a pattern, with a note like, "I'll take care of dinner while you sew." A grandmother who has spent her life at a sewing machine will love to feel like she's 20 again.
Happy sewing, and Happy Mother's Day in advance.
