Which fabric to choose for sewing a dress? The complete guide

Posted by Andy Jaoui on

Choosing the right fabric to sew a dress is the first step — and arguably the most important — of your sewing project. A poor choice of material can turn a perfect pattern into a disappointment. But don't worry: this guide will help you make the right choice based on the type of dress you want to make.

Understanding the essential properties of a fabric

Before choosing, you need to understand 4 key characteristics:

Drape

This is how the fabric "falls" when you hold it up. A fabric with fluid drape (like viscose or silk) will create elegant draping. A fabric with stiff drape (like cotton poplin) will give a more structured silhouette.

Weight (GSM)

Measured in g/m², it determines the thickness and warmth of the fabric:

  • Lightweight (< 150 g/m²): voiles, chiffons, gauzes — for airy summer dresses
  • Medium (150-250 g/m²): crêpes, viscoses, cottons — versatile all-season fabrics
  • Heavy (> 250 g/m²): wools, jacquards, brocades — for structured winter dresses

Stretch

A stretch fabric (with elastane) will forgive small cutting inaccuracies and be more comfortable. A woven fabric (without stretch) will offer a cleaner drape but requires more precision.

Transparency

Voiles and chiffons require a lining. Heavy crêpes and wools are opaque. Keep this in mind when estimating total yardage (fabric + lining).

Which fabric for each type of dress?

Fluid and draped dress

This is the style that best showcases the drape of the fabric.

Best choices:

  • Viscose crêpe: the most versatile, beautiful drape, easy to sew, affordable price. It's our bestseller at So Tissus for good reason.
  • Silk crêpe de chine: the ultimate in luxury. Sublime drape, incomparable feel. From our haute couture arrivals, it's available at prices well below market value.
  • Viscose jersey: maximum comfort thanks to natural stretch, ideal for wrap dresses.

Approximate yardage: 2 to 3 metres depending on length and fabric width.

Light summer dress

For warm days, choose breathable and lightweight materials.

Best choices:

  • Cotton gauze: airy, soft, perfect for a bohemian style
  • Cotton voile: light and sheer (plan for a lining), ideal for ruffled dresses
  • Linen: the star fabric of summer 2026, temperature-regulating and noble, it wrinkles with elegance
  • Cotton poplin: light structure, impeccable for shirt dresses

Tip: for light colours, plan for a thin lining or a slip dress underneath.

Structured dress (sheath dress, tailored dress)

These styles need a fabric that holds its shape without being rigid.

Best choices:

  • Wool cloth: the absolute classic. Dense, warm, impeccable for an office or formal dress.
  • Gabardine: perfect for straight dresses and pencil dresses
  • Premium stretch cotton: a more affordable alternative to wool, good structure, stretch comfort

Tip: add interfacing to structural parts (collar, cuffs, waistband) for a professional finish.

Evening or formal dress

The occasion to bring out the noble materials and exceptional fabrics.

Best choices:

  • Silk satin: subtle sheen, luxurious drape. Our haute couture arrivals give you access to exceptional silk satins at clearance prices.
  • Brocade: for a "ball gown" effect, rich and structured
  • Lace: as an overlay on a base dress, for a romantic effect
  • Velvet: elegant and warm for winter ceremonies

Tip: these fabrics are often more delicate to work with. If it's your first project, order a sample to familiarise yourself with the material before cutting.

Beginner's dress

New to sewing? Here are the easiest fabrics to work with:

Best choices:

  • Cotton poplin: doesn't slip, cuts easily, presses well
  • Viscose crêpe: forgives small mistakes, doesn't fray too much
  • Stretch cotton: the stretch makes fitting easier

To avoid at first: silk (slippery), satin (hard to sew straight), chiffon (too fine), jersey (stretches under the machine).

Yardage: how much fabric to buy?

Dress type Width 110 cm Width 140 cm Width 150 cm
Short sleeveless dress 2.0 m 1.5 m 1.5 m
Short dress with sleeves 2.5 m 2.0 m 1.8 m
Midi dress 2.8 m 2.2 m 2.0 m
Long dress 3.5 m 2.8 m 2.5 m
Long dress + long sleeves 4.0 m 3.2 m 3.0 m

Tip: always plan for 10 to 15% extra yardage for pattern matching (prints, stripes, checks).
